. A very cool august capped off one of the coolest meteorological summers on record in coastal southern california.

August 2010 was one of the coolest on record across coastal sites in southwestern california. During august. And for most of this past meteorological summer (the months of june. July and august). A persistent upper level trough has been located along or just off the west coast. This maintained a significant marine influence across much of coastal southwestern california through the summer. In addition. Ocean water temperatures were below normal. So daily sea breezes provided significant cooling near the immediate coast for much of the summer.

Here is how the month of august and the summer of 2010 stacked up at three coastal locations. Los angeles international airport. Santa barbara airport. And santa maria airport.

At los angeles airport in august. The average temperature for the month was just 65. 8 degrees. Which tied august 1950 as the coolest august since records began in 1944. The average high temperature for the month was just 71. 4 degrees. The lowest average daily high for any august in history.
